Before the Internet, we were limited to the ingredients that were stocked in our local stores. If you lived near a large city you had a broader selection to choose from, but often the choices were paltry. These days we are limited only by our imagination and access to a computer.
For many years I used King Arthur flours that I bought in my local grocery store, always pleased with the quality and consistency, and then I discovered their catalog. I would flip through it, dreaming of all the amazing things I could create with their vast array of ingredients. Now, whenever I am looking for unusual and special ingredients for baking or I am just restocking my pantry, I head straight to King Arthur’s website.
King Arthur Flour, America’s oldest flour company, was founded in 1790 in Boston and is now headquartered in Norwich, Vermont. They are the nation’s premier baking resource backed by the passion and commitment of their dedicated employee-owners. Yep, every employee is an owner in the company, which gives them a unique focus on customer service. Reading through the history helps you understand its evolution to today’s company with its dedication to social responsibility, the environment, the community and maintaining an exemplary level of quality in their products.
With the crush of the holidays looming, we can all use as many sources of information and support as possible. I love King Arthur’s Baking Circle, the online community where you can talk with other bakers, ask questions, find answers to your baking challenges and find well-tested, community approved recipes. The other thing that is really fun to follow is their Baking Banter blog.Written by their staff, it is full of wonderful stories and recipes, just the kind that really inspire me to get in the kitchen.
Here are some of King Arthur’s most popular recipes:
- No-Fuss Focaccia
- Whole Wheat Waffles
- Bacon-Cheddar-Chive Scones
- Braided Lemon Bread
- King Arthur’s Carrot Cake
- Morning Glory Muffins
- Blueberry Buckle Coffee Cake
- Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
- Sourdough Baguettes
- Cabot Cheddar Soda Bread
- Bakewell Cream Biscuits

My favorite thing? Hmmm…
I bake 15-20 dozen cookies a week year round, and about once or twice a month I make the lemon cookies I’ve been working on for a year – they’re almost ready for publication!

My favorite treat to make for the holidays is a Chocolate Fudge Treat made with chocolate, marshmallows, kahlua, and peanut butter. Unfortunately, the recipe is packed away in my public storage locker. I have not been able to find it for 3 years. This was a tradition in my family for about 19 years. Sadly, I googled it and can’t seem to find it. It was from one of the many food magazines available in the early 70s. When I find that recipe, you can be assured I will make a hard copy, post it to my website, and treasure it like it was “gold”. It was a true hit with everyone that tried it.

Shortbread! It’s sort of a family tradition, but I’ve added some chocolate chips and almond extract to the recipe to change it up a bit on occasion!

My favorite thing to make during the holidays has to be my peppermint bark. I have been making it for about 10 yers now spit has become a tradition. Many yers ago I saw peppermint bark at Williams-Sonoma and thought it was too expensive soi bought some good dark chocolate on sale, some Ghiradelli white chocolate and I crushed up last years candy canes and made my own. It was such a hit with friends and family that I started getting Christmas tins delivered to fill. My husband had friends at his office sending him home with tins so they could have some. I make it to this day. Now I have gotten fancy and I use candy molds to make it.

As a kid I loved the cookies my best friend’s mom made. She would never teach me how to make them. “No time”, “too difficult”. As I got older and married and had a family of my own, she taught me the recipe. Turns out it is a Swedish recipe and my family is Swedish also. They are Pepparkakor cookies. The trick is that they have to be rolled VERY thin. Like paper. They are tricky to make but totally worth it!! They are now a family favorite and my family asks to make them every year. I have taught my girls how to make them and how to roll them VERY thin! And, we have a special cookie cutter that we use. You could use any cookie cutter, but this one is special. It is the perfect size to send them in a decorated Pringles container! And, of course we use King Aurther Flour!

Jane – kudos on putting together a fabulous giveaway with KAF! I rotate the holiday goodies but will probably make chocolate peppermint bark, among other things. No family history but always well loved! My childhood favorite to make is black walnut brandy balls. And it’s been a few years. So I might have to make those, too.
Not sure I’ll have time to complete the other “homework” so good luck to those who have! In any case, I’m already following you on Twitter and FB. KAF, too. And I get their newsletter.

Every year I make a few baked goods. They are Pumpkin Crisp, Eggnog cheesecake bars and eggnog bread.
These have all been known to be expected at the family gatherings. This year I almost didn’t make the pumpkin crisp for Thanksgiving but everyone begged so I made it.

For Christmas I love making traditional items like snickerdoodles, gingerbread cookies etc. I do have a new one I need to try that was passed down through Hubs family. We’ll see how it goes!

I remember my father commenting on how much he liked getting fruitcake at Christmastime. (Apparently, since most of us wouldn’t eat it, he loved being able to have the whole thing for himself! haha) After I married, my mother-in-law made me a delicious fruitcake and gave me the recipe. I like to try and make it during the holidays.

My six year old daughter loves rolling and using cookie cutters so we’ll be making lots of sugar and gingerbread cookies for decorating this year.

Hungarian Nut Horns (though our heritage is German) are a family tradition. Rich, flaky buttery pastry squares are folded over a tasty nutty goo made from ground walnuts, sugar, cream and a bit of cinnamon cooked stovetop. Fold the pastry over a tsp of nut filling and bake, then roll in 10x sugar. Amazing with a cup of good coffee!
